Diet for Lap Band
Portioning Tools

The diet for lap band can be likened to a toddler's diet.

It should consist of:

  • small portions
  • frequent meals
  • primarily nutrient rich foods
  • limited junk foods

In other words...

...eat like a 2 year old after lap band surgery! (Acting like a 2 year old is optional.)

If you need help with EXACTLY what to eat and what to avoid, see my detailed information on the diet for lap band here.

Diet After Lap Band: Stock Up On Toddler Utensils

Think I'm kidding?

Small utensils will assure you take small bites.

See the selection of baby utensils here.

A small bite of food in your mouth means a small bite and only a small bite of food will find its way down to your stomach.

Having only a small amount of food trying to pass the band will lessen your chances of any food particles getting stuck in the band (aka "an obstruction").

Toddlers don't take big bites do they? NO! Mom often cuts up food into tiny bites before giving it to the toddler. You should do the same on your diet for lap band.

Eating quickly and not chewing thoroughly results in big CHUNKS of food (yuck) trying to get through the narrow passage created by the gastric band.

Toddlers don't eat quickly do they?!! NO! (And if they do, they're quick to be reminded to slow down.) They play with their little bites of food and they linger at mealtime. And so should you.

Your pouch should hold ~ 4 - 8 ounces of food. That's ~ 1/2 - 1 cup.

Stock up on 4 ounce (1/2 cup) bowls and 8 ounce (1 cup bowls) and small plates and plan to eat from them.

See the portion control dishes I recommend.

If you start with the right portion of food in front of you, chances are you'll finish with the proper portion of food.

Pack meals that you'll be eating at work or on the go in portioned bowls too so you can stick to your lap band diet when you're away from home.

Be sure to notice my suggested bowls below that have an ice pack in the lid!

Principles of Bariatric Eating: Mom Was Right

The diet for lap band can really be boiled down to all the important lessons your mom taught you in kindergarten:

  • Chew your food
  • Put your fork down between bites
  • Don't talk with your mouth full
  • Share your food
  • Sit down when you eat
  • Cut your food into small pieces
  • No seconds

These concepts are ridiculously elementary, yet extremely powerful. However, if you're like most, these lessons were long forgotten on the playground.
