Portion Control Plates
and Portion Control Bowls

Portion control dishes, including portion plates and portion control bowls are a good idea if you're trying to lose weight.

(Small utensils aren't a bad idea either.)

However, they're must haves if you've had weight loss surgery.

See My Portion Dish Recommendations.

Reasons to Use Portion Plates and Portion Control Bowls

Portion Control Dishes Make A Small Amount of Food Appear Visually Appealing

Your bariatric surgery made it possible to feel full on a small amount of food. But let's face it. The surgery works on the stomach, not the eyes!

As you may or may not already know, it's possible to feel physically full after eating a small amount of food, yet mentally unsatisfied and totally deprived.

That's where portion control size plates and bowls come in.

Using portion control dishes...both portion control plates and portion control bowls...make a small serving size of food look appealing.

Imagine 1/2 cup of ice cream presented in:

  • 1/2 cup bowl
  • 2 cup bowl

Which bowl would you rather be served?!

Portion Size Plates and Bowls Assure You Eat the Right Amount

In theory, weight loss surgery will make you eat a smaller amount (~4-8 ounces per meal).

It's possible however, to eat more than you're supposed to.

If you start off with the right amount by using portion dishes, you'll have a better chance of finishing with the right amount.

Here's a list of My Favorite Portion Plates and Bowls:

Dish Diet Set of Portion Control Dishes:
These are a complete set of portion control plates and bowls for one that includes 5 different portion control size plates and 4 portion control bowls. They're available in porcelain or plastic.

I especially like the fact that they're discreet and look like "typical" dishes. You won't find the words "DIET" or "PORTION CONTROL SIZE" splayed across them so no one ever has to know that you're using "special" dishes.

The Portion Doctor Small Portion Plates:
If you don't mind using a plate that looks like a dieting plate, then this is a good choice. You can see perfect portion sizes right on the plate.

The plate is divided into three sections by a picture of a knife and fork. The largest section is meant to hold your vegetables, and the two smaller sections to hold a small amount of healthy grains/starch and 3 ounces of meat/poultry/fish.

Portion Control Size Bowls

Measure Up Bowls:
The "Small Measure Up" Bowl features 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, and 3/4 cup pre-measured portions on the interior of the bowl. The "Classic" or "Large Measure Up" Bowl features 1/2 cup, 1 cup, 1-1/2 cups and 2 cups pre-measured portions on the interior of the bowl.

Portion Control Bowls For Use On-the-Go:

Fit & Fresh Smart Portion Chill Container: Portable 1 cup bowl with removable ice pack to keep food chilled and fresh.

Family Member Can Use Portion Size Plates and Bowls Too

The more food you put on a plate, the more you'll eat. Research proves it.

Chances are that everyone in the family can benefit from using smaller bowls and plates (and cups and utensils)!

Let's face it...it's hard to know what a "normal" serving size is anymore because portions have gotten so gi-normous!
