Pick the Best Personal Blender

The best personal blender is the one you'll actually USE! And your weight loss surgery tool box wouldn't be complete without one.

After gastric lap band surgery (and even on your pre-surgery diet) you'll be drinking a lot of protein shakes, so owning a good blender is important.

My blender is my most prized kitchen appliance.

...not all blenders are created equally.

I once spent an outrageous amount of money on a blender that looked great on my counter but I never used it because it didn't crush my frozen fruit very well and it leaked! (I'm now using it as a vase holding dried flowers because I just couldn't bear to part with it.)

I've often been accused of buying things for "form over function" (what they look like vs. how functional they are), and in the case of my personal blender it was a huge mistake. So I decided to do some research in order to find out which blenders actually work...

...and work well.

And now I'm in love with the Vita-mix. Consumer Reports considers it one of the top 2 best blenders:

The following are less expensive but are also top rated blenders. (Check ratings before choosing a particular model.)

If you don't want to mess with washing a messy blender pitcher, you may like the Magic Bullet Blender

. With this, the pitcher is the cup you drink from.

Quick Tip

To clean your blender, fill the pitcher with water, add a drop or two of dish soap, cover, and blend for a few seconds. Rinse well.

Easy Recipe

Here's a yummy way to drink your vegetables - my Pumpkin Pie Smoothie. It's so delicious, a local smoothie shop serves my recipe during the holiday season!

Blend the following ingredients until smooth:

  • 1 cup water/skim milk/soymilk
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 cup frozen butternut squash
  • 1 cup frozen mango cubes
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1-2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice

Makes 2-4 servings.

Note: Make sure you blend very well. Butternut squash is a bit stringy and needs to be totally blenderized so it doesn't cause any problem with your gastric band.
