Sondra's Odyssey

by Sondra

Today is August 17. My surgery was August 5. I am doing much better this week. Discomfort with my port site has lessened. Started teaching last week after surgery. Was rough at first, but getting better.

Today was my last day on full liquids. Tomorrow I get to start with soft foods. So far I have lost 22 pounds. My clothes are beginning to get much looser and others are noticing my loss.

Got a new hair cut and color.....brightened me.

This is the best thing I have ever done for myself. I am already off of my diabetic and reflux medicine....My meter counts are lower than I believe they have been in ten or more years....

One of most important things about this odyssey is the feeling of confidence I get when I can ignore that feeling of hunger and know that, for the first time in my life, I am in control.

Thanks, Sandra, for the note. I am struggling right now. Total loss so far is 53 pounds, but I just can't get steam up to push past that 200 mark that is only 4 pounds away. The main problem is "mental" because I find myself tired of thinking about what and how much I can eat. I have been snacking here and there on things not good for me because they "make me feel better" until, of course, I step on the scales.

You are one year past your surgery. Tell me how you have done it and give me some helpful suggestions on how to "mentally" move on.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer.

Well I just had to say hello because of the similarities with dates.

My birthday is August 5th, my daughter's is August 17th so there you go. And I'm a Sandra.

Hope you are doing well.

My surgery was a year ago September.

Protein Shakes
by: Suzette

Hi Sondra,

Congrats on your success!
I'm sorry you're having such a hard time finding enjoyable food. :(

Here are some protein shake recipes that you may enjoy.

In addition, if you don't like the "after taste," may I suggest you try another brand of protein powder?

My personal all time favorite is BSN Lean Dessert Protein. And I swear it doesn't have a chalky after taste!

See the list of others that I recommend as well.

Glad to hear you're progressing along.

Thank you for your comment. Today is March 20, and it is now 24 pounds and 3" loss at every major measurement. My experience with mushy foods is less than positive. I tried a posted recipe and it didn't turn out very well. Went back to pureed soup....seems to satisfy.

For breakfast yesterday, I tried a protein shake. Not my favorite taste, but it did seem to sustain me better. Will continue trying this for the time being.

Can anyone give me suggestions on how to jazz up a protein shake to get rid of that "after taste" that it leaves?

Wow Sondra,
Congratulations. I was leary at first also, but feel much better about it now. It is wonderful that you are feeling better.
